Tip of The Day from an Atlanta Home Inspector!

Joe Niehuser, an inspector with Champia Real Estate Inspections, asks the question in the Tip of the Day. Joe is a certified inspector with the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) and a residential ICC code certified inspector.

For those of you who don’t know, Joe explains a bonding jumper below. And he says the contractor got it right in the photos shown in this blog:

“Technically it is a grounding conductor (essentially a ground wire) that bypasses equipment (typically the pressure reduction valve) installed in line with copper water distribution lines. It connects the water line from the street service to the distribution (cold water) lines inside the home. A separate bonding jumper is required to connect the hot water lines (usually installed above water heater).

“Why is that important? The continuous conductivity of the copper water system ensures grounding in case a ground fault occurs (essentially protects against electrical shock),” Joe said.
